Four energy streams I actually own
No 0k MRR business here — instead, four real, different streams shown as energy: a job, solar panels, a rented apartment and a young forest, with actual numbers. The pattern they share: convert active energy (hours, attention) into stored energy (skills, assets) that pays out without you.
1. A job
Input: skill energy, stored once, paid out daily — roughly 2,000 working hours a year. Output: no kWh directly, but €130,000 a year buys ~460,000 kWh at €0.28/kWh. Effort: high — it stops the day you stop. Depends on: one employer, health, the market for the skill.
2. Solar panels
Input: free sunlight. Output: 14 kWp south-facing, no shade → ~14,000 kWh per year, about 38 kWh per day on average. Money: €1,400–3,900 per year depending on feed-in price vs self-consumption at €0.28/kWh. Effort: near zero. Depends on: weather and electricity price — nobody can fire the sun.
3. A rented apartment
Input: past work, converted into a building once. Output: shelter energy for a tenant. Money: €800 rent − €500 costs = €300/month, ≈ €3,600 per year net. Effort: low. Depends on: tenant quality, local market, maintenance.
4. A young forest
Input: sunlight, rain and soil, working 24/7. Output: 0.5 ha of young growth; one large tree a year is a conservative harvest — roughly 1 m³ of wood ≈ ~2,000 kWh of stored chemical energy, €80–100 as firewood. Effort: a few days a year. Depends on: time — the wood mass compounds every year.
What the four streams teach
The job pays the most and is the most fragile — one buyer, and it stops when you stop. Panels, property and land pay less and keep paying while you sleep. Production is the conversion of active energy into stored energy with many buyers and no hours attached. See also: how to turn a salary into energy-producing assets.
Common questions
How can I produce my own energy income?
Convert active energy into stored energy that pays without you: a skill that commands a salary, solar panels that sell sunlight, a property that sells shelter, land that grows fuel. The common shape is the same — do the work once, get paid repeatedly.
How much electricity does a 14 kWp solar system produce?
South-facing with no shade, about 14,000 kWh per year in a temperate climate — roughly 38 kWh per day on average. Worth €1,400 a year at a €0.10/kWh feed-in price, or up to €3,900 if it displaces €0.28/kWh grid electricity.
Is renting out an apartment passive income?
Mostly. On real numbers — €800 rent against €500 monthly costs — it nets about €3,600 a year, in exchange for tenant management, repairs and vacancy risk. It is past work converted into an asset that keeps paying.
Is a forest an energy investment?
Yes — a slow one. Half a hectare of young, fast-growing forest can yield roughly one large tree per year, about 1 m³ of wood or ~2,000 kWh of stored chemical energy (€80–100 as firewood). The real return is compounding wood mass: the asset grows every year with near-zero effort.
What is the best income stream in energy terms?
The ones with many buyers and no hours attached. A salary pays the most per year but has exactly one buyer and stops when you stop. Panels, property and land pay less and pay while you sleep. Diversification across buyers is the point.
Can a salary be considered an energy stream?
Yes — but it is active energy, not stored energy. You sell one buyer your skill and attention for roughly 2,000 hours a year. The strategic move is to convert as much of that cash as possible into assets that pay without your hours.
What is the easiest energy income stream to start?
Plug consumption leaks first — they require no capital and pay immediately. After that, rooftop solar if you own the roof, because it turns free sunlight into cash for 25+ years with almost no effort.
How do I track my energy income?
Map every source, store and drain in one place. The Master Energy dashboard lets you build your own energy network and export the full data at any time — you own it forever.
