Durable Skills Are The Hard Currency
May 11, 2026 · 5 min read · Leadership
In the age of AI, technical skills are being automated rapidly. Programming, data analysis, architectural thinking, machine learning, and even non-tech things like driving or cooking — many roles risk substitution.
But soft skills and leadership skills are the real hard currency. They are durable, timeless, and always demanded. They help you adapt quickly no matter the technology or disruption.
The incredible success of technology during the last decades led to a phenomenon that it became increasingly hard to find people with well developed soft and leadership skills, as I witnessed during the last 15 years.
No matter if it is the Internet, smartphones, entertainment, automation or AI: I observed that fewer people have a well balanced set of tech, soft and leadership skills.
I discuss the 3 large areas of skills illustrated in the picture as a Venn diagram to provide an overview.
Technical Skills (foundational but automatable)
Programming, Architectural Thinking, System Thinking, Data Analysis, Cloud Computing, Cybersecurity, Algorithms, DevOps, Database Management, Software Testing, Machine Learning. And any regular skill from non-software area like driving or cooking.
Soft Skills (human core that endures)
Communication, Self-Drive, Adaptability, Curiosity, Emotional Intelligence, Empathy, Teamwork, Resilience, Creativity, Active Listening, Conflict Resolution.
Leadership Skills (ultimate multiplier)
Positive Attitude, Vision & Strategy, Courage, Embracing Innovation, Empowering Others, Inspiring Teams, Reading People, Delegation, Coaching, Crisis Leadership, Perseverance, Change Management, Accountability, Influence.
Intersection of all three = Durable skill advantage.
AI can code and analyze. AI cannot inspire teams, read human dynamics, endure setbacks, or build trust.
The winners ahead will combine solid technical skills with elite soft + leadership abilities. This mix creates irreplaceable value that never depreciates. Those who have it, do not need be afraid of AI anymore.
Invest in these durable skills relentlessly. They are hard to train, but they are your edge in any future. They are your hard currency.
